The owner of Limestone Furniture Mart in Athens was arrested today on multiple counts of felony theft for failing to deliver furniture ordered and paid for by customers, authorities said.

More theft charges are pending in what, so far, involves 53 complaints of theft and more than $60,000 in undelivered furniture, said Chief Investigator Capt. Stanley McNatt.

Limestone Sheriff’s Lt. Brad Curnutt, who is investigating the case, and Investigator Sean Doyle arrested Scott Francis Connell, 36, of Madison, at his home this afternoon.

Sheriff Mike Blakely said Connell is charged with five counts of first-degree theft and one count of second-degree theft but more charges are pending as investigators review Connell’s banking records.

Connell remains in the Limestone County Jail, where the Limestone County Community Corrections Program has placed a hold on him. Blakely said Connell’s current charges would violate the terms of probation to which Connell agreed following a 2007 arrest and conviction for leaving the scene of an accident with injury. Athens Police Department brought that case.
