Dr. James Kenneth Byrd and Dr. Heather Dawn Scott

Mr. and Mrs. Glenn A. Scott of Athens announce the engagement of their daughter Dr. Heather Dawn Scott of Charleston, S.C., to Dr. James Kenneth Byrd of Charleston, S.C., son of Mr. and Mrs. James P. Byrd of Lexington, S.C.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gillispie of Charleston, W.V., and Mr. and Mrs. Byron W. Scott of Calabash, N.C. She is the great-granddaughter of Mrs. Rose Cavanaugh of Calabash, N.C.

She is a 2000 graduate of Athens High School and a 2004 graduate of the University of Alabama where she received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. She received her medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham.

She is employed by the Medical University of South Carolina as a resident in anesthesiology.

The prospective groom is the grandson of Mrs. Bess Mendoza of Columbia, S.C., and Mrs. Elizabeth Byrd of Columbia, S.C., and the late Julio Mendoza and Hilburn Byrd.

He is a 1999 graduate of Lexington High School and a 2003 graduate of South Carolina Honors College where he received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina.

He is employed by the Medical University of South Carolina as a resident in surgical otolaryngology.

The wedding is planned for Oct. 15,  in Charleston, S.C.
