Limestone schools OK bad-weather day, personnel

Limestone County school board members approved another foul-weather makeup day to make up for canceling classes Feb. 10 due to snow.
During their regular monthly meeting Tuesday, board members set Wednesday, April 13, as the makeup day.
Lost days must be made up because state law requires students to attend 180 days of school each year.
At the beginning of the school year, school officials had set March 11 as a makeup day in case of bad weather. They used that day and then had to add five more to make up for a Jan. 10 snowstorm that closed schools for a week.
Board President Earl Glaze said he hoped Feb. 10 was the last bad weather day for the school year.
In other action Monday, board members agreed to hire one new employee and approved several substitute teachers. Here is a synopsis of personnel action:

• Approved contracts for Beth Bates, homebound teacher; Jennifer Deweese, special education parent (revised); and Syrita Lee, special education visual specialist;
• Approved Kaitlin Haley as elementary teacher at Creekside Elementary School, retroactive to Jan. 6 for the rest of the 2010-11 school year only;
• Accepted retirement request for Carolyn Isbell, CNP worker/assistant at Ardmore High School, retroactive to March 1; and Sherry Scruggs, bus driver at Tanner High School, effective March 31;
• Accepted the resignation of Susan Satterfield, pre-kindergarten teacher at Johnson Elementary School, retroactive to Feb. 11;
• Granted leaves of absence to Deshonna Ford, business education teacher at East Limestone High School, retroactive to Feb. 25 for the rest of the 2010-11 school year only; Chasity Legg, middle school teacher at East Limestone, effective approximately April 6 for approximately seven weeks; Jennifer Carr, elementary teacher at Piney Chapel Elementary School, retroactive to Feb. 17 through April 15; and Sherry Scruggs, bus driver at Tanner, retroactive to Feb. 7 through March 30;
• Granted extended leave of absence to Kasey Beaty, library assistant at Ardmore, retroactive to Feb. 14 for the rest of the 2010-11 school year only;
• Approved the following substitutes: Sonia Hasting for a library assistant at Ardmore, retroactive to Feb. 14 for the rest of the 2010-11 school year only; Billie Harris for a bus driver at Creekside, retroactive to Jan. 5 for the rest of the 2010-11 school year only; Catherine Taylor for a middle school teacher at East Limestone, effective approximately April 6 for approximately seven weeks; Sandra Zirbel for a business teacher at East Limestone, effective approximately Feb. 25 for the rest of the 2010-11 school year only; Holly Huggins for an art teacher at Elkmont High School, retroactive to Feb. 3 through approximately May 13; Donna Lombard for a CNP worker/assistant at Elkmont, retroactive to Jan. 5 through approximately April 1; Vicki Paine for an elementary teacher at Piney Chapel, retroactive to Feb. 22 through April 15; Elizabeth Bates for an elementary teacher at Tanner, effective March 7 through approximately May 6; Holly Kelley for an elementary teacher at Tanner, effective approximately March 9 for the rest of the 2010-11 school year only; Michelle Ramsden for an elementary teacher at Tanner, effective April 18 for the rest of the 2010-11 school year only; Amy Troutman for an English teacher at West Limestone High School, retroactive to Feb. 28 for the rest of the 2010-11 school year only;
