The tour begins with the little known story about the Unknown Confederates whose original headstones mysteriously disappeared. Those in attendance will hear about Col. Daniel Hundley’s diary during his imprisonment at Johnson’s Island and his bold escape. Col. Egbert J. Jones died from wounds received in the Manassas and Private Henry Figures’ body was brought home two years after his death in Virginia’s Wilderness. President Lincoln’s brother-in-law lies at Maple Hill, as does the man imprisoned as a conspirator in Lincoln’s assassination. These stories, and many more, trace the tragedy of the Civil War through the people who lived it. Commemorate the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War by hearing the stories that deserve to be remembered. Tour guides Rhonda Ford and Jacque Reeves will share their extensive knowledge of Huntsville’s past. Sixty-minute tours begin at 5 p.m. every Sunday afternoon from April 24 through July 31, on Wells Avenue in Huntsville, bordering the north side of Maple Hill Cemetery. Cost is $8 per person, $5 kids 12 and under. No reservations necessary. Call 256-509-3940 or 256-527-2488 for more information.
