Inspectors: Wind a factor in Maine lift accident

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine (AP) State inspectors say wind played a contributing role in a Maine ski lift failure that sent eight people to a hospital, but they’re not ruling out other factors.
Inspectors from the Maine Board of Elevator and Tramway Safety are at the Sugarloaf resort following Tuesday’s malfunction. Five chairs tumbled 25 to 30 feet and dozens of other skiers were stranded for more than an hour.
Doug Dunbar from the Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, which oversees the board, disputed Sugarloaf’s statements that referred to the investigators’ early work as “preliminary findings.”
It’s unclear when the investigation will be finished. Dunbar says inspectors “are committed to a thorough process.”
