But on Oct. 8, the wait was finally over, as a new outdoor football scoring system from Daktronics, Inc. was unveiled before the Golden Eagles homecoming contest against Class 5A, Region 8 opponent Lawrence County.

The final piece was put into place three days prior to the game, making it the largest scoring system for high school athletics in the state.

The new addition, which has been selected to The News Courier’s list of Top Sports Stories of 2010, replaced the old scoreboard in the North end zone, providing fans with features such as instant replay and close-up shots of players, cheerleaders, band members and the crowd.

The system will also be used for graduation and other events.

The cost of equipment and installation is being payed for from local school funds that include gate ticket sales and parking from athletic events, playoff money that was set aside and sponsorships.

The Golden Eagle Booster Club also donated money from the annual Legends Banquet.

Eight sponsors will advertise on the scoreboard for a period of five years, at which time they will be resubmitted for sponsorships.
