The cause of death of a person found on a paved lane inside Athens City Cemetery is under investigation, said Limestone County Coroner Mike West.
The body of James Keith Greene, 47, of Thomas Street in Athens was discovered at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday by a woman who was walking in the cemetery, said Capt. Floyd Johnson of Athens Police Department.
West said Greene died after his arm was slit in the crease of the elbow where a major artery is located.
The body was sent to forensics scientists for an autopsy and West said he would not rule on cause of death until a report has been issued.
Johnson said the fatal wound initially appeared to be self-inflicted.
Authorities were on the scene in the portion of the cemetery adjoining Thomas Street for about two hours.
Limestone County District Attorney Kristi Valls also was at the scene.
