Endangered Ala. snail report doing better

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — An endangered Coosa River snail has recovered to the point that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed removing it from the endangered species list.
The service credits changes Alabama Power made in the way it releases water from dams for playing a major part in the tulotoma snail’s recovery.
When the tulotoma was placed on the endangered species list in 1991, it had disappeared from 98 percent of its historical range.
Under a recovery plan initiated in 2000, Alabama Power began carefully regulating the flow on the segment of the Coosa below Jordan Dam.
The company also began releasing water from Logan Martin Dam in pulses to improve oxygen levels and water quality downstream.
