Also indicted were an Athens man accused of sexually abusing an 8-year-old girl, and an Athens man accused of electronically soliciting a 15-year-old girl, records show.

Attempted murder charge

Frances Vernel Thompson, 37, of 18767 McWilliams St., was formally charged with attempted murder in connection with the Dec. 15 stabbing of Anthony “Glen” Brown, 45, of the same address, records show. She is accused of stabbing Brown twice in the back in The Elkmont Missionary Baptist Church parking lot, leaving him in critical condition, Chief Investigator Stanley McNatt said in December.

Witnesses said Thompson stabbed Brown after the two fought about her letting others drink his half-gallon bottle of Heaven Hill bourbon whiskey, McNatt said. Brown and Thompson had been drinking alcoholic beverages and had gone to a relative’s home on Smithfield Road earlier in the night, he said. They argued about Thompson allowing others to drink the whiskey and, at the request of the homeowner, Brown left the home while Thompson got a knife from the kitchen and exited the home, McNatt said.

When she saw Brown returning to the relative’s home, she approached him with her hand behind her back, said, ‘I’ve got something for you,’ and stabbed him, McNatt said.

Sexual abuse charge

In a separate indictment, grand jurors formally charged L.C. Davis Jr., 18, of 1404 Henry Drive of sexually abusing a child under age 12, records show.

He was initially arrested March 15 after being accused of inappropriately touching an 8-year-old girl at the beginning of March, Athens Police Capt. Floyd Johnson said following Davis’ initial arrest. He was released from the Limestone County Jail on March 18 after posting a $25,000 bond, a jailer said Monday.

Investigator Johnny Campbell sought the arrest warrant after an inquiry into a complaint filed by the victim’s mother, Johnson said.

Police declined to say whether Davis was related to the victim because doing so might identify her.

Soliciting minor charge

In a separate case, a 23-year-old Athens man accused of soliciting sex by telephone from a 15-year-old girl was formally charged by the grand jury.

Jeremy Scott Powell of 21209 Elkton Road was indicted for electronically soliciting a child, records show.

Ardmore Police Officer David Posey and Sgt. Tracy Luna first arrested Powell the night of Jan. 10 for allegedly traveling to meet a child for sex and transmitting obscene material, records show.

Powell is accused of sending sexual messages and an illicit photograph to the girl’s cellular telephone. The girl’s mother intercepted the messages after confiscating the girl’s phone while she was grounded, Ardmore Police Chief David Whitt said after his initial arrest. The mother brought the telephone to Ardmore Police and filed a report, he said.

The girl reportedly knew the accused.

Under Alabama law, a 15-year-old is considered a child who cannot consent to sexual contact.

Powell is free on bond.
