‘Clunker’ appliances bring cash

Does your old washing machine vibrate so badly it nearly chases you out of the laundry room?
This might be your chance to evict this overly aggressive tenant.
The federal government has made $4.1 million available to the state of Alabama in a “Cash for Clunkers” deal similar to the one offered for old automobiles a few months back.
Beginning Monday, the state began implementing a mail-in rebate program to help residents replace older, inefficient appliances with Energy Star qualified appliances. The program is scheduled to run three weeks. If funds remain after the initial program, the state may hold a second round of rebates in October during Energy Awareness Month.
Appliance dealers throughout the state are taking part in the program and individual dealers might decide to sweeten the deals with their own incentive packages.
Jarom Haynie of Valley Appliances at 26958 U.S. 72 East said his owners have authorized special deals during the rebate offer period.
“The rebates are $150 for a refrigerator; $100 for a washer; $75 for a dishwasher; $50 for a freezer, and $25 for a room air-conditioner,” said Haynie. “Every appliance dealer, as long as you are a resident of Alabama, is qualified. What we’re doing is doubling the rebate. We take our rebate off the top.”
To claim the state rebate, buyers must visit www.alrebates.com or call (877) 856-6645 to claim the rebate, after which they will have 15 days after the purchase to send in the paperwork.
“This is first-come, first-serve basis,” said Haynie. “When you visit the site you will see that they will post the remaining balance in the program.”
