Three of the seven Kentucky students injured Friday afternoon when their vehicle flipped and rolled on Interstate 65 have been released from Athens-Limestone Hospital and one has been discharged from Huntsville Hospital.
Jordan Zumdick, 17, of Park Hills, Ky., was released around 10 a.m. Saturday, according to an Athens-Limestone Hospital spokeswoman. Katherine Russo, 17, of Park Hills, and Megan Berberich, 18, of Ft. Wright, Ky., were released Friday night after their parents arrived in Athens.
Megan E. Downing, 18, of Ft. Mitchell, Ky., was discharged early Saturday evening from Huntsville Hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Honor roll student Maria Schaffstein, 17, of Park Hills, died in the crash that happened at approximately 1 p.m., a quarter-mile north of the Nick Davis Road overpass at the 351 mile marker.
The other three students are in Huntsville Hospital. Early Saturday evening, Krista M. Noll, 18, of Ft. Mitchell, Ky., and Jessica A. Russo, 17, of Park Hills, remained in surgical intensive care. Noll was listed in serious condition and Russo in critical condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Catherine Ammerman, 17, of Florence, Ky., was upgraded from serious to good condition.
All the students are seniors at Notre Dame Academy in Park Hills, a suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio. Many are student-athletes.
Noll is a tennis player. Katherine and Jessica Russo, who are twin sisters, both signed with Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn., to play soccer, and Megan Berberich signed with the University of Louisville, also for soccer. Catherine Ammerman signed to play basketball at DePauw University in Indiana.
According to a news release issued by the Alabama Department of Public Safety, the accident occurred when the driver, Katherine Russo, attempted to pass a tractor-trailer and her vehicle ran off the edge of the roadway. Russo then apparently overcorrected and lost control. The vehicle entered the median, overturned and continued across the southbound lanes of I-65 before coming to rest upright on the shoulder of the southbound lanes.
All the passengers inside the 2004 Honda Pilot EXL were ejected except Russo, the driver, and passenger Megan Berberich. Both were wearing seat belts. The crash remains under investigation by Alabama state troopers.
