The recent success of Wallace State’s softball team speaks for itself.
Since Jayne Clem took over the program several years ago, the Lady Lions have won a national championship, finished runner-up in 2009, won three consecutive Alabama Community College conference, state and region championships and four consecutive North Division championships.
All that success was enough to lure East Limestone’s Kayla Sneed there to continue her softball career.
“Success was a big factor,” Sneed said at a school signing in front of friends and family Tuesday morning. “I really liked the atmosphere there. It felt like home.”
Clem put the final touches on the 2011 Lady Lions last Sunday by having 14 commitments sign, including Sneed at a ceremony on the Hanceville campus.
“This is one of the most talented groups I’ve signed,” Clem, a Limestone County resident, said. “We’ve got four pitchers, and lots of hitters and speed. They rival our top recruiting class since I’ve been at Wallace.”
Wallace State’s other signees include Haley Barnett, Austin; Nicole Bobrowski, Bob Jones; Heather Parker, Mortimer Jordan; Morgan Martin, Bob Jones; Shawna Gregory, Fairview; Megan Christensen, Grissom; Lauren Payne, Bob Jones; Laci Driggers, Leeds; Haley Bagwell, Holly Pond; Whitney Brown, Fyffe; Madison Scott, Hueytown; Kirsten Gibson, Springville; Michal Robertson, Tuscaloosa County, and Samanth Spence, Cora High in Mississippi.
The Lady Lions have two scrimmage games scheduled before the regular season begins Feb. 12 in the Cowtown Tournament at Forth Worth, Texas. Depending on weather, the first scrimmage is scheduled for Friday against Birmingham Southern. The second is Feb. 7 against UAH at the Wallace State campus.
