WINFIELD, Ala. (AP) — Call center company Sitel Corp. says it will close its Winfield, Ala., center, laying off 302 employees by February.

Sitel, based in Nashville, Tenn., bills itself as the world’s largest call center company. It is owned by Canadian firm Onex.

The Press-Register reports Sitel lost a contract to provide support for the T-Mobile phone company, leading to the closing.

Alabama state government, as well as two cities and the Marion County Commission, spent more than $6 million on buildings for call centers in Winfield and nearby Hamilton in 2001 for a predecessor called Service Zone.

The Hamilton center is still in operation, but the closure will leave governments making bond payments on an empty building in Winfield.
