The daughter of a Limestone County man was killed Thursday in a snowmobiling accident in Vermont where the family had gathered to celebrate the New Year’s holiday, a family friend said.

Kristen T. Bednar, 30, of Long Island, N.Y., died from head injuries several hours after her snowmobile struck a tree just after midnight, said Penne Laubenthal.

Bednar was the daughter of Peter Blum, who lives on the Elk River with his life partner Sally Lewis-Collier.

She died in a New Hampshire hospital, the nearest trauma facility to the crash site in southern Vermont, and was an organ donor, Blum said.

Blum said his daughter was an athlete who taught physical education at Birch Lane Elementary School in Massapequa.

Bednar also is survived by her husband, Michael Bednar, and her mother Janet Blum of Long Island.

A funeral mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church on Long Island.
