Laura Roberts Smith, 82, of Madison passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2010.

Laura was born Jan. 11, 1927, in Athens, and graduated from Ardmore High School as valedictorian, and Auburn University. She was a member of Hillsboro Heights Baptist Church and, in her later years, Trinity Baptist Church.

Laura was a realtor in the city of Huntsville for 39 years and helped many people find a home. She enjoyed this work and made many lasting friends and clients within the profession.

During America’s quest for space, she worked for Chrysler Corp., as a design draftsman, supporting space contract efforts. She took pride in the accomplishments being made as a result of the hard work and engineering skill of many people in the Huntsville area.

Laura was preceded in death by her husband, Horace L. “Tut” Smith; son, Lehman Lance Smith; and her parents, DeWitt Talmadge Roberts and Ollie Mai Roberts.

She is survived by her son, Horace L. ‘Tut’ Smith Jr. and his wife Jeanne; sister, Verna R. Harrison; two brothers, L.T. Roberts and Marion P. Roberts; two granddaughters, Rebekah Hill and husband Josh, and Anna Smith; and two great-grandchildren, Amery Hill and Abigail Hill.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church on Hughes Road in Madison. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Ronnie Brewer officiating. Burial will follow at Athens City Cemetery located on Washington Street.
