Churches offering Thanksgiving meal

Thanksgiving is known in America as a day of feasting, but in the land of plenty, for many, it’s just another day, especially for the elderly and those struggling to make ends meet.

Several churches in the community are striving to fill this need.

The Mildred Harris Memorial Free Thanksgiving Meal Ministry is offering dinner for those expressing assistance in celebrating the holiday.

“Members of the community have joined together once more to carry forth the worthy ministry in honor of Mrs. Harris, who touched the lives of so many people,” said Clarence Johnson, pastor of Poplar Creek Missionary Baptist Church.

Meals will be delivered to apartment complexes and seniors’ homes.

“All who may not otherwise experience the joys of this celebrative meal are welcomed,” said Johnson.

The meal will be served at Antioch CPCA Church Ministry House at Brownsferry and Hine streets.

Phone requests will be accepted by calling Poplar Creek between 1-5 p.m. Monday through Nov. 26, at (256) 729-8852. There is no cost for this meal.

“Volunteers who helped us in the past and those wishing a rewarding experience on this holiday are asked to join us in serving the Athens community,” said Johnson.

Volunteer workers ad drivers, who are being asked to register before Nov. 24, will begin at 7 a.m. and will be assigned different tasks and shifts. To register, call Poplar Creek at 729-8852.

King’s Table

A pre-Thanksgiving community meal is also being offered by New Life Baptist Church at 2314 S. Hine St.

New Life will host the King’s Table Community Thanksgiving Meal from noon to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21.

A full-course homemade meal will be served free. The public is invited to dine. Pastor Antoyne L. Green and members of the church will wait tables.

For information, call Masheldia Green at (256) 654-9355 or the church at 233-7228.
