MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — The state Marine Resources Divisions says people should not eat fish caught in Mobile Bay with lesions visible under its throat.
The Mobile Press-Register is reporting that fish have been caught all over Mobile Bay during the last two months with the distinctive lesions, including trout, redfish, catfish, flounder, mullet and sheepshead. State biologists have so far been unable to pinpoint a cause.
The head of the Marine Resources Divisions, Vernon Minton, said Tuesday the best theory now is that it is environmentally induced, relating to sudden fluctuations in temperature and the large influx of freshwater from heavy rains.
Auburn scientists speculated that an extra heavy dose of pesticides and fertilizers flowing into the bay from heavy rains in north Alabama also might have played a role.
