William Shakespeare said in his play “Othello,” “He who steals my purse steals trash … but he that filches from me my good name robs me of that which not enriches him, and makes me poor indeed.”
He means that honor is a man’s most valuable possession and money is his least. The words still ring true today.
Athens Police charged a man Tuesday with second-degree theft of lost property in connection with money missing from a wallet, said Athens Police Capt. Marty Bruce.
Lucas Duane McGuire, 28, of 18344 Foxford Lane, Athens, was arrested on the charge Tuesday morning and released from the Limestone County Jail Tuesday afternoon after posting a $2,500 bond, records show.
McGuire is accused of stealing a wallet containing $800, which he found in the parking lot of Athens Beverage Co. and the ABC store off U.S. 31 South, records show. He was in the store when the owner of the wallet returned to see if he had forgotten his wallet, Bruce said.
“McGuire admitted taking the money from the wallet, and police found $400 cash on him when they arrested him,” Bruce said.
The law trumps the finders keepers adage.
“If you find a wallet with $800 and ID in it, you can’t just keep the money,” Bruce said.
