Teacher to be ‘slimed’ Thursday

What’s better than dousing a teacher with a slimy substance?
Getting permission to do it for raising money for children in need.
In a project called Help the Harbor, Junior Beta Club members at West Limestone High School and students in kindergarten through 12th grade recently collected 300 paper products and cleaning items along with $1,500 in change to help children with long-term serious illnesses and their families.
The supplies and money will go to Children’s Harbor, a non-profit organization that provides camping and adventure services to sick children and their families, said Laine Morris, Junior Beta Club sponsor. The supplies and money will be used during the upcoming camping season at Lake Martin.
During the event, elementary school students engaged in a pocket-change war in which they collected $1,500 in change. Students in kindergarten through fourth grade competed for a “fun day” and fifth- and sixth-graders competed for a “fun lunch” on field day.
In an attempt to increase donations, Beta Club volunteers told seventh- and eighth-graders that whoever collects the most paper products and cleaning supplies would get to “slime” one of the eighth-grade teachers. When the event was over, seventh- and eighth-graders collected about 300 paper products and cleaning items.
The official dropping of the slime will take place Thursday following an assembly at the school. Children’s Harbor representatives will be at the West campus from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to visit elementary students and speak to middle school students. During the assembly, Junior Beta Club members will give Children’s Harbor 11 large boxes of supplies and a check for the change. Jim Ray, Tammy Jackson and the Big Ben bear mascot for Children’s Harbor will be on campus.
