BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Starting this weekend, visitors at the Birmingham Zoo can get a close-up look at the seven new kangaroos.

The kangaroos are the centerpiece of an interactive exhibit opening Sunday. It will eventually include wombats, wallabies and other Australian animals.

The seven red kangaroos will live in a grassy enclosure that visitors may enter.

The exhibit is part of the zoo’s new push for more naturalistic and interactive exhibits, including the planned Trails of Africa section.

At first, visitors will be restricted inside the enclosure to a gravel pathway on one side. But keepers say eventually the kangaroos may hop right up to guests and may even eat from their hands.

The Birmingham exhibit will be called Kangaroo Kountry.

Several zoos around the country have updated or added Australian exhibits in recent years, including the Louisville Zoo in Kentucky and the zoo in Asheville, North Carolina.
