Athens police sent a number of officers in five patrol cars to a home on Westmoreland Street Monday night to break up a fight between two teenagers that drew a crowd of more than two dozen people.

“We received a call that a fight was in progress at 722 Westmoreland Street and when Officer Paul Green arrived on the scene he called for backup because there were about 25 people at the home and he feared more fights were about to break out,” said Capt. Marty Bruce.

A 17-year-old juvenile was arrested and charged with third-degree assault. The male teenager is accused of attacking a 13-year-old female juvenile.

Bruce said the 13-year-old was taken to Athens-Limestone Hospital where she was treated and released. The case has been turned over to county juvenile authorities for prosecution.

“When officers arrived on the scene, the 13-year-old was sitting on the ground holding her head,” Bruce said. “She had a cut on the right side of her head where she was apparently struck by the 17-year-old.”

Bruce said police have not yet determined why the two were fighting.

“It was a lot of people out there when our officers arrived on the scene,” Bruce said. “We had a call saying there were several different fights in progress.”

Police were still investigating Tuesday.
