Ruth Iglehart Hill

Ruth was called away from this earth on June 26, 2007, while being cared for at Asbury Methodist Village Health Care Center in Gaithersburg, Md., where she was living. She was born Ruth Roberta Gillen in Baltimore, Md., on Sept. 6, 1909. Ruth served as director of Christian Education in First United Methodist Church, Athens from 1975-1987. She grew up in Baltimore, Md., and moved to Milwaukee, Wis., upon marrying Marion M. Iglehart in 1930. They had a very happy marriage and are survived by three children: Donald L. Iglehart of Stanford, Calif., and wife Sheralee Hill Iglehart, Marion I. Beachley and husband Norman H. Beachley of Madison, Wis., and John K. Iglehart and wife Mary Dahlke Iglehart of Bethesda, Md. She had six surviving grandchildren, and a beloved grandson, David, who died prematurely of leukemia at age 29.

She had 13 great grandchildren.

Ruth and her husband, Marion, “Ig,” moved with Cutler-Hammer from Milwaukee to Athens in 1967. Marion lived only three more years. His death was very devastating to Ruth, but propelled her to live out their retirement dreams of serving as consultants to local Methodist churches. Pursuant to that goal she spent two years in Washington, D.C., at Wesley Theological Seminary, obtaining her ordination as diaconal minister.

Following this she served the United Methodist Offices in Nashville, Tenn., as a consultant in Kentucky, Georgia, and finally Alaska. Prior to moving to Alabama she served as president of the Southeast Wisconsin District of the Methodist Women’s Society. During this period she was employed by Hamlet Smith Co. in Milwaukee, handling administrative and financial affairs. She retired to Gaithersburg, Md., in 1987 and later married the Rev. Walter L. Hill.

He lived five more years. She struggled in the last few years with several physical problems, but maintained her incredible memory, sense of humor, story-telling ability, and optimism to the very end. Her presence on earth will be sorely missed, but she will always remain an inspiration of how to live a joyful Christian life for all who knew her. A memorial service celebrating her life is planned for July 30 at Asbury Methodist Retirement Village in Gaithersburg at 10 a.m. A reception will follow in the narthex of the chapel in the Park View Complex. For details or information call Marion Beachley at (608) 845-6112.

Anyone wishing to honor her memory, please consider a donation to the Ruth Iglehart Education Fund at First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 978, Athens, Ala., 35612.
