Former Athens mayor Maurice Nichols died Monday at Limestone Health Facility. He was 88.

Nichols, who was the executive director of the Athens-Limestone Chamber of Commerce before being elected mayor in 1984, retired from the U.S. Army after a 28-year career. He served as mayor from 1984-1988.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church with McConnell Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be Wednesday from 12 to 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church or to the Limestone Veterans Museum.

Full arrangements will be announced by the funeral home Wednesday.
