Athens Police continue to search for Jarvis Werner Hines, 20, of Tanner, who is suspected of shooting and killing a 64-year-old Athens man early Thursday morning.

Investigators have sought Hines after he was named by a witness as the person who shot 64-year-old Donnell McCullough four times—twice in the chest, once in the arm and once in the shoulder.

On Saturday, in a possibly related development, Athens Police Capt. Marty Bruce said investigators were interviewing 16-year-old Castillo “Poo” Carthen, who relatives say was with Hines earlier this week.

Carthen was reported missing by relatives Friday, who said they thought he might be with Hines. Bruce said Carthen’s aunt picked him up from a Decatur location on Saturday. He confirmed that Carthen had been with Hines sometime in the last few days.

A Dodge Caravan van believed to be the one driven by Hines was found late Thursday night abandoned at the home of Hines’ stepmother in Decatur.

The suspect was identified by McCullough’s next-door neighbor as one of three people in McCullough’s efficiency apartment early Thursday morning. Bruce said the neighbor, whose name is not being released because he is a witness, was a friend of Hines. The neighbor was visiting McCullough in his apartment at C16 of Houston Court Apartments when Hines joined them, Bruce said.

The neighbor said when words were exchanged between McCullough and Hines, he grew fearful and went into the bathroom. He heard shots and when he came into the living room, McCullough was dead and Hines was gone.

The neighbor saw Hines get into a van matching the description of the one recovered in Decatur.

McCullough was pronounced dead inside his apartment, located in a low-rent housing complex for the elderly and disabled.
