‘Person of interest’ named in robbery

Athens police investigators say they have a “person of interest” who they would like to question in connection with last week’s Regions Bank robbery.

“We’re trying to locate this person of interest,” Lt. Floyd Johnson said Thursday. “But first we’ve got to get with people at the bank and show them some information that came available to us. We’ll know more about it later.”

Johnson would not identify the “person of interest” or where he lived prior to the Nov. 22 robbery.

The day of the robbery, the suspect was described as “petite” by bank employees. Police said the suspect might have been driving a car stolen out of Jackson County.

The robber, described as a white male in his late 20s or early 30s, entered the bank shortly before 2 p.m., pulled a pistol on a teller and told her to fill the plastic bag he had in his hands with money.

No one was injured in the heist, police said. Investigators have not revealed the amount of money the robber made off with.

Bank employees told investigators that the man appeared to be alone. The employees saw the robber flee the scene in a late 1980s or early 1990s light green Pontiac Grand Prix, headed east on U.S. 72 toward the Interstate 65 interchange.

The car had a Jackson County tag and police received a partial number. Investigators said it had a “39” and an “A” on it.
