The Canebrake Club of Athens has asked the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Tennessee Valley Authority for permission to use wetlands along Piney Creek to develop single-family residential lots around Canebrake’s golf course.
It would require filling in 8.67 acres of wetlands and relocating 4,500 linear feet of stream channel with culverts for the development of the lots.
To evaluate the impact of the proposal, the Corps is seeking comments from the public; federal, state and local agencies and officials; Indian tribes and other interested parties.
Currently, 17 wetlands and 16 streams are located with the 288 acres of the Canebrake development, officials said. Of these, two streams and five wetlands were judged to be unavoidable in the development.
Canebrake is located on Athens’ eastern side and now features patio homes and other residential structures as well as an 18-hole golf course.
The National Register of Historic Places knows of no properties listed in or eligible for the National Register that would be affected by the proposed work.
