Athens Police investigators continue to chase down leads in a Wednesday mid-afternoon robbery of Regions Bank branch on U.S. 72 East.
Police Detective-Lt. Floyd Johnson said Friday that the robber, described as “petite” by bank employees, might have been driving a car stolen out of Jackson County.
Police do not have an identity on the robber, but Johnson said technicians are trying to isolate a still photo from bank surveillance video, which they will be released for publication to see if anyone can identify the man.
The robber, described as a white male, in his late 20s or early 30s, entered the bank shortly after 2 p.m. a man, carrying a plastic bag and pointed a handgun at a teller and demanded money.
No one was injured in the robbery. Athens police and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents are investigating.
“They described him as between 5 feet, 6 inches and 5 feet, 7 inches and weighing between 130 and 150 pounds,” said Capt. Marty Bruce.
Bank employees told investigators the man appeared to be alone. Bruce said employees saw the robber flee the scene in a late 1980s or early 1990s green Pontiac Grand Prix, headed east on U.S. 72 toward the Interstate 65 interchange.
Johnson said the car might have been stolen out of Jackson County. Witnesses got a partial tag number that contained a 39 and an A.
Witnesses said the robber was wearing a red cap, blue jeans, a black-and-whit e T-shirt.
Anyone with information about the robbery is requested to call Athens Police at (256) 233-8700.
