Regions Bank branch on U.S. 72 East was the target of a stick-up at mid-afternoon Wednesday.

Athens Police Chief Marty Bruce said that shortly after 2 p.m. a man, described as small in stature, entered the bank with a bag and pointed a handgun at a teller and demanded money.

No one was injured in the heist, Bruce said. He said he does not know how much the robber made off with and he would not be free to divulge the amount if he knew.

Athens police investigators and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents were still on the scene interviewing bank employees at late afternoon.

“They described him as between 5 feet, 6 inches and 5 feet, 7 inches and weighing between 130 and 150 pounds,” said Bruce.

Bank employees told investigators the man appeared to be alone. Bruce said employees saw the robber flee the scene in a late 1980s or early 1990s light green Pontiac Grand Prix, headed east on U.S. 72 toward the Interstate 65 interchange.

“The car had a Jackson County tag and they got a partial number,” said Bruce. “The tag had a 39 and an A.”

Bruce said investigators had other information that he could not divulge because it had not been confirmed.

Bruce said the robber was wearing a “roll-up” cap, but employees said it was not a toboggan-style cap. He said investigators are studying bank surveillance video for clues.

Meanwhile, dozens of frustrated bank customers pulled up wanting to withdraw money for the long holiday weekend. Onlookers and police directed them to other Regions branches.
