Child died of smoke inhalation

A 4-year-old boy, Louis Antonio Graze, apparently died of smoke inhalation Friday night in a fire at the Athens apartment where he lived.

The boy was found lying facedown in a chair at the duplex at 424 Elkton St. His body was taken to Huntsville Forensics Lab for an autopsy, Limestone County Coroner Mike West said.

The fire was contained to the living room, which sustained smoke damage and a small amount of fire damage. The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

The uncle, who is from Guatemala, said through an interpreter that the fire was caused by a short in a living room light fixture.

The mother, Juana Graze, 22, was able to break out a window and pass her 9-month-old infant through a window to safety. A 3-year-old brother and the uncle, Marselino Graves, 17, also escaped the fire.

The mother and the 3-year-old boy were treated at Athens-Limestone Hospital for possible smoke inhalation and minor cuts. The 9-month-old was taken to another home at 1001 N. Jefferson St., about three miles away. The uncle declined treatment.

In interviewing a witness at the scene Friday, The News Courier inadvertently misidentified the gender of Louis Graves. We regret the error.
