Friends of the Limestone County Archives have put the second historic calendar of Athens-Limestone County up for sale to the public. The 2007 calendar, printed by Sundry printing in Athens, features pictures of various historical places and people of the community.

“All of the pictures of course come from the files,” said Betty Taylor, special collections curator for the Limestone County Archives.

The calendar is currently selling for $12 at the Limestone County Archives, located in the old railroad station, and at U.G Whites and Pablo’s on Market, both on the square.

The calendar features the history and pictures of the Limestone County courthouses on the front cover. Inside, it showcases Hiram McSherry, one of the first rural mail carriers, a play bill from a 1929 play at Athens College with several Limestone County citizens’ names, Ernest Hine, a former mayor of Athens, the Corn Club, a forerunner club to the 4-H Club, V.M. Leonard Grocery and Rolling Store, among various other historical features.

“I remember we used to call the rolling stores, peddlers,” said Taylor. “You’d run out and take your eggs or whatever and swap it for whatever they had.”

The funds raised from the sales of the calendar will go to help the Friends of the Archives to purchase new research materials.

The archives are considering buying a computer for public use, said Philip Reyer, an archivist for the Limestone County Archives.

“They’re going to do an inventory and see where we’re lacking,” he said. “The County does not but research materials, that is done by Friends of the Archives.”

Last year, the Friends of the Archives printed and sold out of their 300 calendars. This year the second year for the calendar they have only printed 500 and have already sold approximately 100 calendars.

Reyer and Taylor said the calendars are a hot item to buy as Christmas gifts.

“Last year we only bought a 150 at first and then we had to print more,” said Taylor. “Anybody interested in history should be interested in having one. Because these calendars will tell the story of Athens.”
