GUNTERSVILLE – Guntersville displayed gaudy offensive numbers all season.
The Wildcats lived up to their reputation again Friday by rolling up 355 yards of offense in a 35-0 routing of Ardmore in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.
“We were out of position defensively in the first half,” Ardmore coach Tracy Malone said. “They have a lot of speed and a lot of guys who can hurt you. Their speed on the outside really hurt us.
Guntersville took an early lead when Josh Gunther scored on a 4-yard run. The Wildcats scored again in the second quarter on a 45-yard run for Chaz Rogers.
The Wildcats extended their lead to 21-0 late in the second quarter on a 38-yard run from Trevor Diamond.
Rogers made it 28-0 in the third quarter when he scored on a 1-yard run.
Guntersville added some insurance in the fourth quarter when Rogers hit Tucker Bridges on a 6-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 35-0.
Ardmore only managed 142 yards of offense. Junior running back Derrick Green led the Tigers with 75 yards on 14 carries.
“They were good offensively, but they were a lot better on defense than we thought,” Malone said. “They had a lot of speed on the defensive line.”
Even though Ardmore’s season is over, Malone has no regrets.
“After going 0-10 last year, finishing with an 8-3 record and making the playoffs was huge,” he said.
“This is a great group of seniors and they deserve all the success they had. We’re going to miss those guys.
“Our program took a big step in the right direction this year,” he said. “Now we have to build on that success.”
