Three weeks ago, a home on Cottonbelt Road in northwestern Limestone County was burglarized and thousands of dollars in jewelry were stolen. On Wednesday afternoon, the victim of that burglary received a call from a man wanting to sell some of the jewelry to him.
“The caller told the victim that he knew where he could get some of his jewelry back for $150 in cash,” said Sheriff’s Investigator Capt. Stanley McNatt. “The victim called us and we had him to set up a meeting.”
The victim, who had Investigator Brian Ruble hidden in the back seat of his pickup truck, met the man Wednesday afternoon at Hine and Market streets in Athens.
“He came walking right up to the truck and Brian thought the man was going to get in the back seat with him,” said McNatt. “But before he could, Brian jumped out of the truck and took him into custody.”
Arrested at the scene was Dewayne McCullough, 40, of 723 Plato Jones St., Athens. He is charged with first-degree receiving stolen property and possession of a controlled substance. McNatt said McCullough had some pills in his pocket when arrested.
“He had two pieces of the jewelry stolen from the residence in his possession,” McNatt said. “He had a gold and diamond ring and a diamond charm from a necklace. That jewelry was worth $3,000,” he said.
McNatt said investigators do not believe McCullough is the actual burglar, but has information that will lead them to the thief or thieves.
Meanwhile, Investigator Josh McLaughlin who was following up on a lead on another burglary arrested another man Wednesday for theft.
Timothy Wayne Garries, 45, of 14930 Grubbs Road, Athens, is charged with second-degree receiving stolen property, possession of a controlled substance and first-degree possession of marijuana. He has posted $12,000 bond.
McLaughlin recovered two stolen handguns inside Garries’ home. He also found a small amount of cocaine and marijuana during the search, McNatt said.
