Large election turnout expected

If voters do not turn out in large numbers in Tuesday’s election in Limestone County, some local election officials will be surprised.
“It’s hard to predict, but based on the number of people who voted absentee ballots here, we should have a good turnout come Tuesday,” said Limestone County Circuit Court Clerk Charles Page. “In the past, when we have big absentee numbers, we usually have a good election-day turnout.”
Page said 463 people voted absentee in the general election. That is about normal and a good indication of a good voter turnout. Absentee voting closed at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 2.
On Nov. 7, the polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.
For the first time, Tuesday’s results will be tallied at a different location. Page said election officials would be working in the second-floor office of the Clinton Street Annex. Final results from Limestone County are expected to be in no later than 9 p.m., he said.
“In some of the statewide races, we expect there might be three separate vote counts — that is how close some of those races are expected to be,” he added.
There are four legislative seats up for election in Limestone County — two in the state House and two in the state Senate. Two Limestone County Board of Education seats also are up for election.
Tommy Carter of Elkmont, who is retiring and did not seek re-election, now holds House District 5. Democrat Henry White of Athens and Republican Ronnie Coffman of Elkmont are vying for that seat. District 5 takes in the city of Athens, north to Ardmore and Elkmont and west in the Good Springs area. Its boundaries lie in Limestone County, but it does not include the entire county.
Republican incumbent Mickey Hammon, who is seeking re-election, now holds House District 4. Democratic challenger Sue Mitchell opposes him. District 4 takes in all of southern Limestone County and a portion of Morgan County.
Democrat Tom Butler of Madison, who is seeking re-election, now holds Senate District 2. Republican challenger Jim Burden of Athens, who is the chairman of the Limestone County Republican Party, opposes him. District 2 takes in all of Limestone County except the Swancott area. It also takes in a portion of Madison County.
Retiring Tommy Ed Roberts of Decatur now holds Senate District 3. Democrat Bobby Day and Republican Arthur Orr, both of Decatur, are fighting for that seat. District 3 takes in south Limestone County at Swancott and portions of Morgan County.
In the race for Limestone County Board of Education Place 6, Republican challenger Anthony Hilliard opposes Democratic nominee Darrell Blankenship. They are seeking the seat now held by Roger Whitt, who did not seek re-election.
In the race for Limestone County Board of Education Place 7, Democratic challenger Terri Harris opposes incumbent Republican Earl Glaze.
