COXEY – Derrick Green’s 15-yard touchdown run in overtime proved to be the difference as Ardmore defeated Clements 20-14 Friday night.
Green scored on the second play of the Tigers’ first possession in overtime to secure the win.
“I’m real proud of our players and our coaches,” Ardmore coach Tracy Malone said. “We made some adjustments at the half and those worked for us in the second half. I could not be prouder for our players and our coaches.
“We just seem to find a way to win.”
The Colts got the ball first in overtime and moved the ball to the 1-yard line, but the Colts were penalized for having too many men on the field. Landon Curtis stepped in front of what appeared to be a scoring pass from Cody Arnold to end Clements’ chance to score.
Jesse Cobb’s interception late in the first quarter set up the Colt’s first touchdown.
After Jeremy Craig had a 10-yard run, Arnold scored on a 1-yard carry. Josh Cooper’s point-after kick was successful.
Curtis was on the end of a 15-yard scoring pass from Clay Wales with 10:43 remaining in the opening half. Jerrod Mullins provided the extra point.
Ardmore scored again when Green ran 17 yards for a touchdown. Mullins provided the extra point with five seconds elapsed in the fourth quarter.
Cobb scored on a 12-yard pass from Arnold late in the fourth quarter to send the game into over time.
“We had two objectives coming in tonight’s game,” Ardmore assistant coach Duane Wales said. “First, play physical and keep them from scoring quick touchdowns. Clements has an explosive team.
“(Jesse) Cobb is an excellent back and (Cody) Arnold is a very good quarterback. Both are very capable scorers. Our line created some good blocks and played well.”
Green led Ardmore with 148 rushing yards and two touchdowns. The Tigers rolled up 244 yards of total offense. Clements had 232 yards of offense – 133 rushing and 99 passing.
Clements travels to Leeds next week to take on the Green Wave in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs. Ardmore’s first round destination will be decided today after the tiebreakers are counted.
