The Limestone County Commission is expected to make application Monday for a federal grant to supply bullet-proof vests for Limestone County deputies.
Limestone Chief Deputy Randy King told commissioners Wednesday during a work session that the U.S. Justice Department is making available to the county a $11,250 grant for 20 bullet-proof vests. He said the county would have to provide matching funds to be eligible for the grant.
“The match would cost the county $5,625 for the 20 vests, which will be enough for every road deputy we have on staff,” King said.
The bullet-proof vests deputies are now wearing will be outdated next year, King said.
Commissioners expressed no opposition to applying for the grant and told King the matter would be voted on at the commission’s regular meeting Monday.
Commissioners also transferred Cody Wade Lewter to a deputy position and voted to employ Jacob Rupp and Gene Foust as corrections officers in the Limestone County Sheriff’s Department, pending drug and alcohol screening.
Sabrina Bates was transferred to a data- processing-operator-trainee position at the commission office, retroactive to Oct. 23. Gail Holt was promoted to a recording-clerk-II position in the Probate Judge’s Office.
Commissioners also agreed to move the county’s youth services in Tuscumbia to a new facility in Madison. As a result of the agreement with Neaves-Davis Center for Children, Limestone County juveniles housed in the Tuscumbia detention facility would be moved to Madison.
