CLEMENTS – With no time left on the clock and the game tied 26-26, Josh Cooper drilled a 33-yard filed goal to give the Clements (2-2,2-1) a 29-26 victory over Colbert Heights (3-1, 2-1).
“All I want is a chance in the fourth quarter,” Clements’ coach Forrest Williams said.
They had it, down 26-19 with the ball on their own 2-yard line with 6:08 left in the fourth quarter. Colts’ quarterback Cody Arnold ran and threw the ball down the field, igniting the Colts’ offense. His main target was Jeremy Craig, who caught 7 passes for 91 yards on the night.
“We overcame a little adversity in the third quarter for the biggest win we’ve had,” Craig said.
Arnold finally connected with Cooper for 27-yard touchdown strike. Cooper kicked the PAT to knot the game 26-26.
The Colts defense then held the Wildcats to three plays. Colbert Heights punted the ball to the Colts 40. Arnold advanced the offense 30 yards setting up a 48-yard filed goal attempt. That failed, but a roughing the kicker penalty gave Cooper his chance to be the hero.
“I was just praying that Jeremy and Cody would do their thing, and I prayed to God for the rest,” Cooper said.
Cooper’s prayers were answered when he made the field goalk to keep his team in playoff contention.
Clements jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the first half before the Wildcats scored, making it 19-7 at halftime. Jesse Cobb rushed for 101 of his 112 yards.
