Several companies eyeing Delphi

Several companies have expressed an interest in purchasing the bankrupt Delphi-Saginaw complex in south Limestone County. With that in mind, several county work crews were on site Wednesday cleaning up the now closed Plant 22.

Limestone County Commission Chairman David Seibert said cleanup crews were there to make the plant, which is owned by the state, “as attractive as possible” for future buyers.

“I don’t know if they have a definite proposal, but they are selling the whole division,” said Limestone County Economic Development Coordinator Tom Hill. “I do know there are several companies interested in it.”

This is not the first time county work crews, including the commissioners themselves, have been on site cleaning up Plant 22 that closed years ago.

“This was a jungle before we got here,” said Seibert, referring to the head-high underbrush and trees on the grounds. “We have three different litter crews in here cleaning it up. It was just grown up real, real bad.”

The last time the grounds were cut and cleared was two years ago when commissioners brought in work crews to clear the property.

“The state is not going to do it, so Delphi asked us and we decided to clean it up,” said Seibert. “We want a good industry down here. If the state doesn’t see priority in it, we certainly do.”

The state purchased Plant 22 four years ago during Don Siegelman’s administration.

“We just want to be good neighbors to Delphi and help out,” Seibert said. “They asked us to come in and help clean up, so here we are.

“We’ve had our bushhogs and tractors down here. The grass was so high that it chocked our bushhogs down.”

Hill said the county is “going above and beyond” in its work to clean up Plant 22.
