You don’t have to be present to win.

All you need is $5 and you could win $1,000 cash or some great new prizes in this year’s Wacky Quacky Ducky Derby – an annual fund-raiser that helps Keep Athens Limestone Beautiful.

The event is Oct. 7 in Athens.

“The prizes are very different from previous years,” said Lynn Hart, executive coordinator for Keep Athens Limestone Beautiful. “The 19 additional prizes are brand new and all very valuable. Most are worth $100 or more.”

In addition to the $1,000 grand prize from In2Wireless/Verizon, a division of Railroad Bazaar, other sponsors are offering the following prizes:

•One of eight $100 cash prizes – sponsored by Compass Bank, First American Bank, Crews, Inc., The News-Courier, Athens-Limestone Hospital, Athens State University, Athens Recycling Center and Sheriff Mike Blakely.

How to adopt a duck

All you have to do to enter the derby is adopt a stuffed duck. For a $5 donation to Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful, a duck will be entered into the race in your name. If you adopt a Quacker’s Dozen, your donation of $50 will earn you two extra ducks. Just fill out an entry form and, if you wish, name your ducks. Ducks can be adopted at the following locations:

•In2Wireless/Verizon locations in Athens

•First American Bank — Athens and East Limestone branches

•Pablo’s on Market

•Athens-Limestone Recycling Center on Lucas Ferry (just south of Hwy. 72)

How prizes are awarded

The In2Wireless/Verizon $1,000 grand prize will be awarded to the first duck to enter the specially designed duck trap in the championship race.

Two heats will be run with the first 10 ducks from each heat being entered into the race for the grand prize.

All 20 ducks in the championship race will go home with one of the prizes listed below, based on the order in which they enter the duck trap.
