Bond for 26-year-old Domingo Ortiz Velasquez was set at $1 million Tuesday during arraignment before Limestone County Circuit Court Clerk Charles Page Jr.

Velasquez, of 1001 Frazier St., is accused of stabbing Santos Pablo Lares, of 1200 Wheeler St., in the chest about 10:30 p.m. Saturday. Athens Police charged him with murder.

“We felt like he would be a flight risk because he was in the process of getting out of town when we caught him Sunday,” Capt. Marty Bruce said Tuesday. “That is why his bond was set so high.”

Velasquez remained in the Limestone County Jail Tuesday.

Police said apparently there was an altercation in the driveway at 1001 Frazier Street and Pablo Lares was stabbed and fell to the pavement in front of the driveway. Pablo Lares was dead when an ambulance arrived, from what Bruce said appeared to be a single stab wound to the chest.

The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville is performing an autopsy.

Investigators have not determined what prompted the fight because most of the witnesses do not speak English. They were working with interpreters to determine the cause.

Velasquez told investigators he stabbed Pablo Lares after he and some other men attacked him in front of his mobile home.
