Athens man to be arraigned for fatal Saturday stabbing

An Athens man will be arraigned today in the fatal stabbing of another Athens man.
Domingo Ortiz Velasquez, 26, 1001 Frazier St., Lot 1, is accused of stabbing Santos Pablo Lares, of 1200 Wheeler St., in the chest Saturday. night
He remained in the Limestone County Jail without bond Monday.
“Apparently there was an altercation in the driveway at 1001 Frazier Street and this guy got stabbed and fell to the ground,” said Limestone County Coroner Mike West. “He fell on the pavement on road in front of the driveway. EMS was called but he was dead when they arrived.”
The victim appeared to have died from a single stab would to the chest.
“We should have preliminary autopsy results back (Tuesday),” West said.
The Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville will perform the autopsy.
Investigators have not determined what prompted the fight because most of the witnesses do not speak English. They were working with interpreters to determine the cause.
Ortiz Velasquez told investigators he stabbed Pablo Lares after he and some other men attacked him at his mobile home.
