More than 30 renowned artists will display and sell their artwork at an upcoming event to help raise money to revitalize downtown Athens.
This one-day cultural event – sponsored by Art on the Square Inc. – will be Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. around the Limestone County Courthouse.
Artists will display and sell original artwork, including paintings, pottery, jewelry, metal, and other mediums. Styles will range from traditional to eclectic, with prices in all ranges. The event is free and open to the public
“This event gives residents an opportunity to purchase original art by local artists who work hard to bring something unique to the community,” said Gail Bergeron, vice president of Art on the Square Inc. and art professor at Athens State University.
In addition to the art sale, a silent art auction will be held Sept. 7 to help raise money for Art on the Square. The auction will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 7 at Sassy’s Fraz, 108 West Market St. This event will allow you to preview Art on the Square works and buy original artwork from local and regional artists. Tickets are $20, or $35 for two, purchased at the door by cash or check only.
Other activities at Art on the Square will include live music at the Railroad Bazaar stage and the Athenian Art area, where children can participate in art experiences. Food will be available as participants walk the streets and visit different shops.
First Presbyterian Church, one of Athens’ oldest landmarks, plans to give sanctuary tours and display its art collection.
“Athens has it all, and with events like Art on the Square, drawing residents and tourists downtown, Athens can be booming again,” said Jeanette Rich of the Greater Limestone County Chamber of Commerce. She describes Athens as “a small town rich in history,” and adds, “You can’t recreate history or instantly build a community.”
Art on the Square Inc. is a non-profit organization created by artists, a local university art professor, collectors and ordinary citizens committed to bringing the arts to their city and enriching the economic core of Athens. This small group of ordinary citizens have secured corporate sponsorships, food donations, managed entertainment, organized set up, coordinated preamble events, and received raffle items from local businesses.
