David Almon Bates

David Almon Bates, age 76, of Montgomery, formerly of Athens, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006, at Baptist Hospital in Montgomery.

Burial will be at 2 p.m. today at Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery with the Reverend Billy Duncan and the Reverend Norman Simmons officiating. Leak Memory Chapel in Montgomery is handling arrangements.

He was born June 21, 1930, in Limestone County to Lewis Bates and Eddie Ruth Johnson Bates. A member of the 1323rd Engineering Division of the Alabama National Guard in Athens, he was activated during the Korean conflict and served his country honorably in Korea.

He moved to Montgomery after returning from the war and lived there for over 50 years and was active in the VFW and Korean War Veterans Association. HE was also a deacon and ardent supporter of Highland Avenue Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Lewis Bates.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Donaldson Bates; one son, David Alan Bates and wife Marijane of Suwanee, Ga.; two sisters, Mabel Lee and Dorothy Weathers of Athens; five brothers, Edward of Elkmont, Hugo and Harold of Athens, Bobby of Montgomery and Donald of Boise, Idaho, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Wallace Sadler, Stanley Lyles, Bill Smith, Bill Bruner, Richard Stowlers and Jerry Burger. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons and members of the men’s Bible class of Highland Avenue Baptist Church.



Larry Keith Goff

Larry Keith Goff, 64, of Athens, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006, at Huntsville Hospital. Arrangements will be announced later by McConnell Funeral Home.



Mildred Leona Martin

The funeral for Mildred Leona Martin, 84, of Athens, was at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Spry Funeral Home with Dan Anderson officiating. Burial was in Copeland Cemetery.

Mrs. Martin died Monday, Aug. 21, 2006, at her home.

She was born April 17, 1922, in Limestone County. She was a charter member of the East Highland Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons, Wayne Martin of Athens and Mickey Martin of Capshaw; five grandchildren, Michael Martin of Capshaw, Scott Martin of Capshaw, Tommy Martin of Athens, Angie Underwood of Ardmore and Kelly Pratt of Huntsville; and seven great-grandchildren, Logan Underwood and Seth Underwood, both of Ardmore, Leah Martin, Luke Martin, Lilah Martin, Lane Martin and Matthew Martin, all of Capshaw.

Pallbearers will be Michael Martin, Kenneth Pressnell, Scott Martin, Shawn Underwood, Steve Pratt and Joel Norwood.

Tommy Martin will serve as an honorary pallbearer.



William Harry Overmyer

A graveside service for William Harry Overmyer, 76, of Athens, will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, at Germantown cemetery with Doug Colwell officiating. Limestone Chapel Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Mr. Overmyer died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006, at his home.
