Steve White’s name will no longer appear on the ballot this November as a candidate for the District 4 seat on the House of Representatives, a Democratic Party spokesman said Wednesday.
White, who was dismissed from West Limestone High School in May after being accused of showing obscene materials to eighth grade students, faxed a letter Wednesday morning to the headquarters of the Alabama Democratic Party saying he was withdrawing his candidacy, said Zac McCrary.
McCrary said members of the party’s executive committee will discuss a replacement candidate at a meeting Saturday in Montgomery. That candidate will run in the general election against Republican incumbent Micky Hammon.
White was dismissed after 10 years as a science teacher when parents complained their children saw video clips in class that showed an animated Bill Clinton in graphic sex acts, a woman drinking a beer with her bikini top pulled down and a star covering her breast and other clips.
Following an investigation in which White’s classroom computer was confiscated, the Limestone County Board of education voted 6-1 to dismiss White. The firing was upheld on appeal in a ruling released Monday.
State Superintendent of Education Joe Morton sent White a letter notifying him of a hearing Sept. 6 in Montgomery to consider revoking his teaching certificate.
White said Tuesday he is guilty only of a “lack of judgment” and his punishment was too harsh.
White ran unsuccessfully for the District 5 seat in 1994 and 1998 and favored having the superintendent elected by a vote of the people.
