A 28-year-old Athens man was arrested Friday by Athens police and charged with letting two children under age 9 view pornographic magazines and play with unloaded handguns.
Harold Kentrell Robinson, of 1418 East Elm St., was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.
The incident occurred Aug. 5 while Robinson was babysitting the children, a 7-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl, at his apartment, said Detective-Sgt. Trevor Harris.
There were no injuries reported or signs of sexual abuse.
Investigators said Robinson allowed the children to play with several unloaded handguns while at the same time allowing them to view magazines that showed images of nude women.
Robinson was arrested after the mother of the children complained to police. Under questioning by police, he admitted allowing them to play with the guns and view the Playboy magazines.
“He said he didn’t think it was all that big of a deal,” Harris said.
“We found no evidence that the children were being sexually abuse,” said Harris. “But, he was watching while the children were looking at the magazines and allowed it to continue.”
Their mother, who had to go to work, dropped off the children at Robinson’s apartment.
He was an acquaintance of the mother, police said.
During that time, Harris said a neighbor of Robinson’s came over and one of the children told her what was going on. She reported it to the mother who then questioned the children. The mother then called police to investigate.
Robinson has posted a $1,000 bond and has been released from Athens City Jail.
