KNOXVILLE – Last year, former Athens standout Wes Brown admits he may have been a little timid going into his first season at Tennessee. This year, Brown has a better idea of what to expect, and is looking forward to having the opportunity to compete for playing time at defensive end.

“Now that I’ve got a season under my belt, I’m a lot more comfortable,” Brown said. “I’m approaching the season with the expectations of earning playing time. When the season starts, everybody is equal, and it all comes down to who wants it most.

“My position coach told me to be ready to play, so I’m making sure I’m ready when I get my shot. I’m just trying to make the best out of my situation.”

So far, Brown is pleased with how he has progressed as a player in the Vols’ system. He currently weighs 260 pounds – 15 pounds heavier than when he came in – and feels he is stronger and more mobile than last year. He credits his progression to the Vols’ strength and conditioning program.

“Our strength and conditioning program is like nothing I have ever went through in my life,” he said. “You have to work hard, and you see results fast. I am way stronger than when I got here, and I think I am in the best shape of my life.”

The former Class 5A All-State defensive end come out of high school billed as one of the best defensive ends in the state and could have played anywhere he wanted. But since he grew up a die-hard Vols fan, he chose Tennessee.

Brown doesn’t have any regrets about choosing the Vols.

“I love it here,” he said. “It’s a blessing that I’m here playing football at a place I love. I chose Tennessee because I wanted to play on a program that has high expectations every year. I have no disappointments.

“I’ve made some really good friends here on the football team. I know if I needed some advice, I have friends I could turn to here.”

Last year Tennessee suffered its first losing season since 1988, but Brown looks for the Vols to get back on track this year.

“Everybody from the players to the coaching staff have been working hard to make sure that doesn’t happen again,” Brown said.

Just like Brown was considered one of the state’s top defensive end prospects in 2004, Athens has another defensive end being considered in the same light this year. Alfred McCullough committed to Alabama this summer, and is following a path similar to his former teammate.

Brown’s advice for McCullough is the same he would give any player attempting to make a jump to the collegiate level.

“Alfred (McCullough) needs to work out and run everyday,” Brown said. “It’s better to come in prepared, because when you first get there it’s tough. It’s always better to stay ahead of the game.”
