Athens home hit by gunfire

Athens police were questioning a 29-year-old Athens man Monday night in connection with what appears to be a drive-by shooting on Westmoreland Street.

“We are not sure if the suspect drove by the house and opened fire or whether he stopped and shot into the occupied home,” said Lt. Floyd Johnson. “We are questioning one suspect and may charge him with the shooting later on in the night.”

Johnson said police were called to the scene at approximately 4:30 p.m. Monday when someone reported that shots had been fired into a home. Johnson said police know of one person and maybe more inside the house at the time of the gunfire.

“No one was hit that we know of,” Johnson said. “We have not found a weapon yet, but we did recover several shell casings from a 9 millimeter handgun.”

Police converged on the area in West Athens just after the call came in and had a suspect in custody within minutes.

“When the officers got in behind the suspect he pulled over and did not resist,” Johnson said.

Investigators believe the shooting was in response to an argument between two men Monday over a bicycle.
