EAST LIMESTONE – The motto at East Limestone this football season is “bigger is better.” That’s the case anyway for the Indians’ offensive line, with the entire unit averaging over 250 pounds each.

With that much mass up front paving the way, it should make life a whole lot easier for Chad Dewitt and Jonathan Pinque in the backfield.

Even though East Limestone’s offensive linemen have the needed mass it takes to be successful, they are also among some of the best athletes on the field. When you combine those two traits, you have the makings of a special football player, and there aren’t many players anymore special than R.J. Brown.

The combination of Brown’s size, speed, athletic ability and intelligence make him one of the most talented offensive linemen in North Alabama, and that is why he has been selected the No. 8 Limestone Super Senior by The News Courier.

“R.J. (Brown) is a great kid,” Cavnar said. “He is a hard worker and great leader. He has worked extremely hard to get where he is now, and he will play a big part in everything we do.”

Typically, most offensive linemen don’t receive very much glory, but Brown has a different way of looking at things. He believes the offensive front’s glory comes when one of their backs have a big game.

“That’s what it’s all about,” Brown said. “When (Jonathan) Pinque or (Chad) Dewitt have big games, we have done our job. Those guys give us credit, and that’s all the glory we need.”

Another great thing about Brown is he doesn’t specialize, which is huge at a school East Limestone’s size. Along with his duties on offense, he plays an important role on the Indians’ equally talented defensive front.

“I want to help us win football games, and I will do what ever coach Cavnar needs me to do to get that accomplished,” Brown said.

Brown is just one of several talented linemen East Limestone features this year. He believes the main reason this group has gotten so good over the years is because of how hard they push one-another.

“Me and Dresden (Williams) are pretty close,” Brown said. “We are also very competitive with each other. We really push each other to do more, and that makes both of us better.”

All the hard work that Brown has put in is paying off, and he now has opportunities to play football at the collegiate level. He has gotten looks from Samford and North Alabama so far, and plans on visiting West Alabama in the future.

“They are all great schools, and I think I have a really good shot playing at both places,” he said. “The coaches at Samford told me they plan on coming to watch me play this fall, and UNA told me they would stay in touch. Coach Cavnar went to UWA, and he thinks it would be a good fit for me.

“My main goal is getting an education, but I would really love to play football while I’m doing it.”

Even though Brown has big dreams for the future, his goals for the present are simple. “I want to win our region and go deep in the playoffs.”

With the talent that East Limestone has assembled this year, that goal could become a reality.

“We have worked pretty hard this year, and I think we have a pretty good team,” Brown said. “We are going to continue working and take it one week at a time.”
