Board clears SWAT team in shooting

Members of a Huntsville SWAT team were justified in using deadly force during a June 27 shooting in eastern Limestone County, a review board concluded Tuesday.

Huntsville Police Chief Rex Reynolds concurred with the unanimous findings of the Incident Review Board that the shooting was “in policy.”

The board examined evidence and heard testimony in the shooting of Kenneth Wayne Jamar, 50, at his home on Honey Way, which is located just east of Limestone Flea Market off U.S. 72 East.

The Huntsville Police SWAT Team was assisting federal agents serving multiple felony warrants across North Alabama and Limestone County when the shooting occurred. Before SWAT. team members entered Jamar’s house, they identified themselves as police officers serving search warrants, said Huntsville police spokesman Wendell Johnson. Once inside, they discovered another door shut and locked and again identified themselves as police officers, Johnson said.

When they broke down the door, Jamar was standing in the room with a gun pointed at SWAT team members, Johnson said.

Jamar ignored several commands to drop his weapon and officers shot him several times to protect themselves, according to the findings of the review board. Jamar was treated at Huntsville Hospital and later released.

Because the shooting took place, the Limestone County Sheriff’s Department conducted the investigation.

The case will now go before Limestone County District Attorney Kristi Valls, who will determine if a case against the SWAT team members should go before a county grand jury. A grand jury would decide whether to indict the members.

Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely has already said that he does not anticipate any charges against Jamar, mainly because he believes he has been through enough by being shot and hospitalized. However, the decision is up to the district attorney.

Limestone County Chief Investigator Stanley McNatt testified Tuesday before the review board in Huntsville about the department’s findings in the investigation.
