EAST LIMESTONE – When talking about East Limestone football, this first thing that comes to mind is speed. This year doesn’t look to be any different for the Indians.

One of the main reasons that East Limestone has begun to have so much success is because of versatile athletes like Lagarius Mayberry who are capable of doing everything on the football field, and do it well.

Mayberry will continue to play a vital role in East Limestone’s success in every phase of the game. He is the leader of the Indians’ talented secondary at his defensive back position, will be their top receiver, will carry the ball from his wing back position and also returns kicks. It is because of this versatility that Mayberry has been selected the No. 11 player on The News Courier’s Limestone Super Seniors list.

“The biggest thing I have to do this year is step up and be a leader on both sides of the ball,” Mayberry said. “This is our senior year, and we want to go out right.

“There are a lot of people expecting us to do good this year, and we don’t want to let them down.”

Mayberry’s biggest ally on the football field is his speed and athleticism. It is because of his explosive speed that not many receivers can find a way to get behind him. That’s just the way the Indians’ senior defensive back likes it.”

“When I’m on the football field, my number one goal is to not get burned and give up a touchdown pass,” Mayberry said. “My speed helps me get to where I need to be to make a play on the ball,

“When you break up a big play and pick off a pass, there isn’t a better feeling in the world. Things like that can really kill the other teams confidence.”

Despite being one of the best defensive backs in the county, Mayberry’s speed is a huge part of East Limestone’s offense and special teams. With the speed and explosiveness that he, Chad Dewitt and Jonathan Pinque bring to the table, it really makes for a balanced attack from the Indians.

With a solid offensive line, East Limestone coach Mike Cavnar has made some minor adjustments to capitalize on the Indians’ team speed, and Mayberry looks to play more of a role.

With Mayberry’s speed and athleticism, playing football at the next level is a possibility. He has been seeking advice from the coaching staff on what he needs to do to move on to the next level, and hopes he can find a way to make it work out for him.

“I love playing football,” Mayberry said. “That’s what I live for. I really hope I can find a way to play football somewhere next year.”

Mayberry and the rest of the East Limestone football team have worked all summer in preparation for the upcoming season. He is focused on making sure East Limestone achieves its goals.

“There is a lot of pressure on us to do good this year,” he said. “But that only makes us stronger. We have been through a lot of stuff together as a team, and we never let each other down. Everybody on our team has worked really hard for this year, and now we’re just ready to get it started.”

Tomorrow The News Courier will feature its No. 10 player on the Limestone Super Seniors list.
