A high-speed chase that started near the Limestone County Courthouse in Athens late Monday afternoon ended on U.S. 72 West in the Coxey community near the Elk River with one suspect taken into custody.

Law enforcement officers from several agencies including Limestone County, State Troopers and Athens Police chased the suspect down several Athens streets and then on to U.S. 72 with speeds in excess of 100 mph. The chase ended when the suspect was taken into custody at U.S. 72 West and Davis Road.

During the chase, the suspect almost hit several cars on U.S. 72 West of Athens and officers were prepared to use steel spikes across the highway, if necessary, to get him stopped, said Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely.

“I was one of them chasing him in Athens and he was like a mouse in a maze,” said Athens Policeman Perry Gooch. “Once he got to U.S. 72, I fell out of it and the county continued to pursue him.”

Blakely said Michael Truman Green, 41, of Athens, was in the Limestone County Jail Monday night charged with DUI, reckless driving and reckless endangerment. Blakely said additional charges will be added sometime today.

“He just got out of jail about six months ago,” Blakely said.

“I remember the last time he was arrested we had to chase him down the same way.”

Blakely said Deputy Tom Gilbert started trailing the 2003 Ford Explorer in Box Alley (Plato Jones Street) and the officer noticed the driver trying to avoid him.

“When he got the courthouse he took off,” Blakely said. “We chased to 5th Avenue, then to Highway 99, New Cut Road and then on U.S. 72. We finally got him stopped around Davis Road by pinning him in.”
